PAINTING OUT OF SORROW is a unique and deeply moving portrait of death and remembrance. In 1992, Bing's mother died after a prolonged illness. Within the year, she lost two other close members of her family. A widely respected visual artist and art educator, Bing began a series of paintings and journal entries that chronicled the mourning period that followed. From a quiet hospital room farewell to the dramatic changes of seasons and moods, from the solitude of daily tasks to the contemplations of angels and eternity, it proved to be a period not just of grief but of renewal and hope. here, those powerful words and images, as vibrantly colorful as they are strikingly original, have been brought together in a visual memoir, transforming her own experience ot loss into a journey that is both intensely personal and universal, meant to comfort anyone who has grieved.
The chair of the Art Education Department at the Massachusetts College of Art, Claudine Bing is an exhibiting artist whose work has appeared in museums and galleries throughout the country. She is the recipient of numerous prizes and fellowships. This is her first book.
